Australian national Craig Wright, who falsely claimed to be Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, received a one-year suspended sentence in the UK for contempt of court. In a December 19th virtual hearing, Judge James Mellor ruled that Wright violated a court order by filing lawsuits against Bitcoin (BTC) developers.

The sentence includes a £145,000 fine ($180,000 at the time of publication). This ruling is related to a case brought forth by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), which accused Wright of breaching a court order to stop suing firms based on his false claim to be Satoshi. In March, a UK court ruled that Wright was not Satoshi Nakamoto.

Despite this, he continued to make these false claims until July when he essentially admitted it on his website. The lawsuits filed by Wright sought a total of approximately £900 billion ($1.1 trillion) in damages from more than 100 companies. His lawyer argued that these lawsuits were merely a “desperate publicity stunt.”
