The UK government has launched a consultation with the artificial intelligence (AI) and creative industries on potential legal frameworks for AI models to use copyrighted material. The government has proposed a range of policies for both sectors to provide feedback on until Feb. 25, 2025. Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Peter Kyle, said that uncertainty over copyright law is holding back both sectors from reaching their full potential.

One policy option allows AI companies to use copyrighted material without permission and permit commercial use for any purpose, while another allows companies to use copyrighted material for AI training unless creative professionals opt out. Another option strengthens copyright laws, requiring licensing in all cases.

The consultation also asks if the government should maintain the current laws but acknowledge that this would result in a lack of clarity for copyright holders and AI developers.
