Canadian rapper and music giant Drake joined the list of high-profile figures who were victims of an X-rated account hack on Saturday night, as his account was logged and used to popularize a fake Solana currency. It was based on a token called $ANITA, created from mainstream rapper Drake and his cartoon character Anita Max Wynn.

The compromised posts provided false information that “$ANITA” was created with Stake, a cryptocurrency gambling site backed by Drake. Additionally, the meme coin’s name correlated with Drake’s “Anita Max Wynn Tour,” during which the artist would return to Australia and New Zealand for the first time since 2017. This connection likely gave them additional legitimacy, rallying fans and traders to purchase the coin.

$5 million in trading volume before scam exposed

In less than 24 hours, the newly promoted memecoin reached a trading volume of over $5 million USD, as reported by DexScreener. However, skepticism quickly arose, as traders quickly identified the posts as fake. Drake’s team eventually managed to recover the account and remove the fake posts.

Increase in high-level X-account hacks

#drake is not the first celebrity to fall victim to such scams on the social media platform. Recently, several major X accounts, such as the Cardano Foundation, Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Metallica, have also been hacked and used to advertise fraudulent tokens in the last week alone. The Cardano Foundation incident was much less severe in terms of trading volume.

Platform security faces challenges

This series of attacks has raised concerns about the security measures of X’s account, as the fraudsters are using high-profile personalities to promote their scams. Followers of these celebrity accounts are encouraged to proceed with caution regarding any cryptocurrency promotion from suspicious accounts.
