Bitcoin sets a new all-time high of over $106,000

Since Trump won the election, the world's largest cryptocurrency has risen over 50%

Bitcoin surged to an all-time high, continuing a rally that has seen cryptocurrency prices increase by more than 50% since Donald Trump won the election on November 5.

The world's largest cryptocurrency briefly broke through $106,000 (£83,890), before retreating to around $105,000 in Monday's Asian trading.

The incoming Trump administration is seen as much more crypto-friendly than the Biden White House.

On Thursday, the President-elect of the United States reiterated that he is considering establishing a national reserve for digital currency, similar to the country’s strategic petroleum reserve.

“Since the election, the rebound in Bitcoin has been parabolic, and the FOMO—fear of missing out—momentum is gaining strength,” Peter McGuire from trading platform XM.com told the BBC.

“Many investors believe $120,000 is achievable by the end of this year, and then by 2025, there are rumors that it could exceed $150,000 by mid-year.”

Earlier this month, Trump appointed Silicon Valley entrepreneur David Sacks as his AI and cryptocurrency czar.

Sacks is a former PayPal executive and a close friend of Trump advisor and major donor Elon Musk.

Trump also stated that he would nominate Washington lawyer Paul Atkins, a supporter of cryptocurrencies, to be the new head of Wall Street regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Last month, the current head of the SEC, Gary Gensler, announced he would resign from the position on the day of Trump's inauguration, January 20 next year.

“I thank President Biden for entrusting me with this incredible responsibility. The SEC has fulfilled our mission, fearlessly and impartially enforcing the law,” Mr. Gensler wrote on social media platform X.

Trump previously revealed that after the SEC chairman took legal action against cryptocurrency companies, he planned to fire Mr. Gensler on the “first day” of his new administration, which sparked controversy in some circles.
