Love is the golden thread that connects souls. During the Nobel Prize Museum chair signing event, Han Jiang signed her name next to the signatures of the two previous laureates, Annie Ernaux and Jorn Riel. In the early hours of December 8, Han Jiang delivered her award speech titled 'Light and Line' at the Swedish Academy. In her speech, she began with lines from a poem she wrote in her childhood, sharing the creative journey behind each of her works, and the persistent question that troubles her is, 'Why is the world so violent and painful? Yet, why is the world also so beautiful?'. Now she realizes that it is simply because of the love she harbors for humanity behind her words, prompting her to return to historical moments time and again, allowing emotions to be conveyed along the line of words to a reader — 'I try to infuse into my sentences the vivid sensations that I, as a mortal with blood flowing through my veins, experience, as if I am releasing an electric current. When I feel this current reaching the reader, I am shocked and deeply moved. In these moments, I once again experience the thread of language that connects us and how to engage with the reader through this living current.'
