PANews, December 13 - According to Cointelegraph, consumer advocacy group 'Public Citizen' and other interest groups are urging U.S. lawmakers to take action before the next Congress is sworn in to confirm Caroline Crenshaw's reappointment as a commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In a letter to the U.S. Senate on December 12, over 40 organizations requested legislators to vote in support of Crenshaw's nomination, which would allow her to continue working at the SEC until 2029.
The Senate Banking Committee was originally scheduled to decide on the nomination of SEC Commissioner on December 11, but later postponed the vote, raising questions among many about whether legislators have enough time to confirm Crenshaw's nomination during this congressional session. The letter stated: 'Bipartisan cooperation at the SEC is indeed in jeopardy. The incoming Trump administration has indicated that they are considering breaking the tradition of having the opposition party select two minority party candidates.'
Crenshaw is a Democrat, originally nominated for a term ending in June 2024, but she has been allowed to continue working at the SEC until the end of 2025. President-elect Trump is expected to be sworn in on January 20, 2025, and the new Congress with a Republican majority will be sworn in on January 3, so the window of opportunity for Democrats to confirm an SEC commissioner during their control of the Senate is very narrow.
