Bitcoin ATM operator Byte Federal suffers a serious hacking incident, exposing data of 58,000 users

One of the largest Bitcoin ATM operators in the United States, Byte Federal, recently disclosed a serious data breach incident. Hackers successfully infiltrated its system through a vulnerability in the GitLab development tool, stealing sensitive information from approximately 58,000 users. This data included names, birth dates, addresses, identification numbers, social security numbers, transaction records, and even key content such as user photos.

It was revealed that this intrusion occurred on September 30, but it was not discovered until November 18, exposing blind spots in information security monitoring. Byte Federal confirmed this incident in a filing with the Maine Attorney General and stated that it has taken responsive measures. However, the variety and sensitivity of the leaked information have raised strong public doubts about its security system.

Following the incident, Byte Federal quickly reset customer accounts, changed passwords, and upgraded security protocols. Simultaneously, the company advised users to take the following proactive measures:

Change Passwords: Update the passwords for all relevant accounts to ensure security. Credit Protection: Add fraud alerts or freeze accounts at major credit bureaus to prevent identity theft.

Monitor Account Activity: Regularly check bank accounts and credit reports to detect any unusual activity promptly.

As an operator with over 1,200 Bitcoin ATMs, Byte Federal's data breach highlights the urgent need for data protection in the cryptocurrency industry. Behind the prosperity of decentralized finance, the centralized storage of user data has become a primary target for hackers, and this incident serves as a reminder of the importance for companies in the industry to enhance information security standards.
