World Mobile CEO Micky Watkins Discusses Relief Efforts Following Hurricane Helene

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene caused significant destruction in North Carolina, resulting in over 230 deaths and $53 billion in damages. The tragedy affected millions of people and left many without mobile access.

World Mobile, a telecom company specializing in decentralized wireless networks, facilitated the rapid deployment of “AirNodes” to restore mobile connectivity for survivors. These nodes provide cellular signal directly to end-users and require a connection called “backhaul,” which can be provided by various technologies, including satellite connectivity.

In remote locations like those affected by Hurricane Helene, World Mobile’s AirNodes connect via Starlink, converting satellite signal into cellular coverage. This enables anyone within a mile radius of the node to access emergency services, contact loved ones, and reconnect with the world. World Mobile’s mission is to “democratize global connectivity through its blockchain-based decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN).” The company recently passed the 500,000 daily users mark and completed its first four global AirNode drops, with the latest selling out in under three minutes.

The telecom industry is due for a shake-up, with legacy mobile network operators struggling to evolve and malpractice rife. World Mobile aims to disrupt this market by offering a fully private, secure, community-powered service that fairly shares revenue with users and network builders.
