Why does India have a per capita grain output of less than half of China's, yet become a world grain exporter? While China has become a net importer of grain.
This is quite puzzling, right?
I think the core reason is that land in India is privately owned, and the inevitable result of privatizing land is concentration. Concentration itself is not a problem, but if urbanization does not develop quickly enough to absorb the excess population, it will become a problem.
50% of Indian farmers own only 1% of the land, among which 35% are landless farmers. So the big landlords in India produce grain that the poor in the country cannot afford, of course, it goes to the international market.
So it’s not that private ownership is all good, or that all aspects are good. The underlying logic of the rich having wine and meat while the poor freeze to death on the streets is private ownership.
