Layer 1 (L1) blockchain Sui faced a two-hour outage on Thursday morning (21) before recovering.
The company addressed the outage on its X account, attributing the issue to a scheduling bug.
Sui Network faces two-hour outage after surge in users
The Sui blockchain justified its two-hour downtime due to a scheduling bug. This issue caused its validators to stop producing new blocks, thus leading to a temporary interruption in network operations. However, the outage occurred after the blockchain experienced a surge in the number of active users. Between November 7 and 19, the number of daily users jumped from 668,000 to 826,000.

The outage was met with mixed reactions from the community. Some were impressed with how quickly validators were able to resolve the issue. On the other hand, others were concerned about the stability of the blockchain and their investments in the network.
Two hours of downtime for Sui Network? That’s a big red flag for a blockchain that’s supposed to be cutting-edge, says one X user.
Furthermore, users were quick to draw parallels between the Sui outage and the similar situation that the Solana blockchain faced in February. Previously, the blockchain experienced an outage that lasted nearly five hours. Considering that Sui has been dubbed the ‘Solana killer’ for its stability, this recent outage could very well put that moniker at risk.
SUI, the famous Solana killer, just had a 1 hour outage today. And contrary to what common sense might dictate, that is OPTIMISTIC!! It is actually following in the footsteps of the Blockchain it seeks to replace. And we know how that ended, added another X user.
Right before the outage, SUI was trading at approximately $3.70, only dropping to $3.35 during the incident. On its way back to recovery, it has nearly reached its pre-outage price, sitting at $3.54 at press time.

Incidents like this highlight the challenges of creating a trustless digital system in the evolving cryptocurrency industry. It also serves as a lesson for other networks to improve their resilience and reliability.
