Translation: Vernacular Blockchain
DeSci has been hot lately, and today I want to share how DeSci and BioDAO currently operate, based on my speech last week at EFDevcon in Bangkok.
(DeSci super long article).
DeSci 2049 is a vision of future science that combines biotechnology with permissionless markets driven by open scientific data and open access.
We know that Bitcoin has achieved permissionless currency, and ETH has achieved permissionless code.
Many of us invest in cryptocurrencies to protect our autonomy and the freedoms that are being slowly and silently stripped away.
A similar movement is forming in the fields of science and medicine, as our freedom to innovate, self-experiment, and disseminate science is gradually eroded by a failing biomedical research and development system.
Today's system lacks incentives to develop cures. Goldman Sachs downgraded its rating in 2018 because a biopharmaceutical company developed a cure for hepatitis C and questioned whether curing patients was a 'sustainable business model.'
The number of deaths caused by prescription opioids continues to rise. What our system needs is lifelong consumers.
Scientists spend too much time seeking funding instead of focusing on researching science. Imagine what it would be like if software developers spent most of their time looking for funding instead of writing code.
Most of the world's scientific talent has yet to be fully utilized. We have failed to achieve a hopeful and prosperous solarpunk future because we have not upgraded the infrastructure of science and technology. This creates a world full of scientific friction instead of a world of scientific fantasy.
What if we could build a permissionless scientific world?
Self-sovereign science, defined as being driven by open data and fluid markets, aims to find cures.
So, what role do @Molecule_dao and @bioprotocol play in this?
Molecule is a protocol that puts scientific intellectual property on-chain.
BIO is an engine that provides launch and acceleration for on-chain scientific communities (BioDAOs) made up of scientists, patients, and investors.
BioDAOs are built on blockchain to create intellectual property (research, drugs, products) targeting specific scientific fields or diseases.
For example, @vita_dao has funded multiple projects in the field of longevity science and research, including the VITA-FAST project located at @Vikorolchuk's lab at @UniofNewcastle.

Our team helped build the first wave of BioDAOs covering multiple scientific fields. When I gave this speech last week, the total market cap of BioDAOs in our network was less than $100 million. Now it has exceeded $230 million!

BIO guides scientists, patients, and biotechnology founders through the process of putting the scientific community on-chain, including aspects such as token economics, community building, funding, liquidity, and more.
BIO holders vote to incorporate DAOs into the network—similar to a community-owned accelerator—allowing the best teams to stand out and launch their communities on-chain.
Upcoming projects will take place on the BIO Launchpad, including @endrarediseases, @QuantumBioDAO, and @longcovidlabs.
Several new BioDAOs focus on specific patient populations, seeking solutions and accelerating new methods for cures.
Curetopia (@endrarediseases) targets the over $1 trillion rare disease sector, led by @eperlste, a Y-Combinator alumnus, Harvard PhD, and rare disease entrepreneur, who has advanced a drug to Phase 3 clinical trials with only $5 million (far below the typical cost of over $100 million).

Long COVID Labs (@longcovidlabs) is accelerating the search for cures for over 100 million patients worldwide, led by former Stanford neuroscientist @rd108, who self-treated his own long COVID.
Today, @longcovidlabs is announcing our first research study using combination antiviral therapy, which has begun general eligibility screening.
@QuantumBioDAO is developing quantum microscopes for observing quantum biological phenomena, led by MIT PhD @ClariceDAiello, one of the world's leading scientists in quantum biology:
Quantum Biology DAO's @geoffanders discussed the potential of building quantum microscopes that can unlock the following innovations:
• Wearable device to accelerate muscle recovery
• Launch mobile applications for cell therapy
• Efficient lab-grown meat production
