StarkWare's CEO Eli Ben Sasson stated during DevCon 2024 that Starknet's transaction speed is expected to increase fourfold in the next three months, while transaction fees will decrease fivefold. This improvement mainly comes from better compilation and faster execution of its native smart contract language Cairo. Starknet plans to boost transaction speeds to over 1000 TPS, comparable to Solana's performance. Currently, Starknet's average transaction fee is only $0.002, and this is expected to further decrease, making it one of the cheapest Ethereum layer 2 networks.
StarkWare is also exploring the introduction of the OP_CAT improvement proposal to support native settlement on Bitcoin, with this upgrade expected to be implemented within the next 12 months. The launch of OP_CAT will bring a series of new features to Bitcoin, including "covenants, ZK-rollup, and L2 networks". This will make Starknet the first L2 network to conduct native settlements on both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
