A trader named qklpjeth has found himself in the spotlight of the crypto community after losing 7,912 ezETH (about $25.8 million) due to... an incorrectly copied address. 😱
❓ What happened?
On June 19, qklpjeth accidentally sent tokens to a smart contract that does not support withdrawals. The error was fatal: the funds are locked forever. 🔒
Despite attempts to contact the developers of the Renzo project, it was not possible to solve the problem - “regulatory restrictions” did not allow changes to be made to the smart contract code.
On November 10, the trader turned to the crypto community for help and even offered a reward of 10% of the amount (~$2.5 million) to anyone who could return the funds. 💰
🤔 Is there a problem with the ERC-20 standard?
Many users have noted one important point: this situation would not be possible when working with ETH. If there was an error in the address, the system would simply issue a notification and reject the transaction. However, ERC-20 tokens do not have this protective mechanism. ⚠️
This problem has been known since 2017, but a solution has not been found. Who knows how much more money will be lost due to this "feature" of the standard? 😔
🔒 How to avoid such mistakes?
Double check the address before sending. Don't rely on copy/paste only.
Use test transactions to send small amounts.
Choose wallets with built-in protection against such errors.
