Elon Musk has announced that the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.), an initiative focused on reducing federal waste, will operate with complete transparency.
On November 13, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the agency would post all of its actions online and include a public leaderboard highlighting the most egregious examples of wasteful government spending. Musk encouraged the public to report cases where D.O.G.E. cut essential programs or failed to eliminate unnecessary ones.

At a rally in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Musk pledged to overhaul government spending by addressing inefficiencies and saving taxpayers’ money. He intended to lead the initiative to cut $2 trillion in annual federal expenditures. The billionaire entrepreneur humorously referred to himself as the “Secretary of Cost-Cutting” and stated the new agency would operate openly, aiming to engage citizens in holding the government accountable.
Musk also suggested implementing an assessment system to evaluate employees for wasteful practices, proposing generous severance packages for those laid off. He emphasized his belief that artificial intelligence could be critical in reducing costs.
Former President Donald Trump, who reportedly supported creating such a commission earlier this year, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating that it could help eliminate improper spending and fraud. He announced that the agency’s work would conclude by July 4, 2026, symbolizing a fresh start for government efficiency.
Expert opinions question Musk’s ambitious goal
Despite Musk’s confidence, experts have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of his $2 trillion target. Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary, described the proposal as unrealistic, pointing out that federal payroll accounts for only a fraction of the budget. Summers argued that achieving such significant cuts without affecting Medicare or Social Security programs Trump promised to preserve would be nearly impossible.
Glen Hubbard, an economist and former dean at Columbia University, echoed these concerns. He noted that major spending programs such as defense, interest payments, and entitlements leave limited room for cuts. Marc Goldwein from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget suggested the D.O.G.E. would need a broader mandate to deliver meaningful savings.
Pushback from federal workers’ union
The initiative has also drawn criticism from federal workers and unions who fear widespread layoffs. Union leaders, already bracing for potential cuts during Trump’s second term, voiced their opposition to the D.O.G.E. commission, arguing it could negatively impact essential government services.
While Musk remains optimistic about using technology to address inefficiencies, experts and critics question whether his ambitious vision can become a reality. All eyes are on the new agency as it begins its quest to streamline federal spending.
