Bitcoin applications, sometimes called Bitcoin clients, allow users to interact with the Bitcoin network. In their basic form, the application allows the user to generate and store private keys and connect to the peer-to-peer network of the currency. The first Bitcoin application was released in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin, as a free and open source application. This application, commonly referred to as the Satoshi application, is used as a wallet on personal computers to make electronic payments or as a server to receive those payments and other payment-related services. Bitcoin-Qt is considered a reference application because it represents the mechanism through which the Bitcoin protocol works and serves as an example for other applications. When making purchases using smartphones, Bitcoin applications are often used that generate and/or read QR codes to facilitate the transfer and payment process. There are also several applications currently available that work as servers that confirm the actions that take place on the network and add them to the transfer block. $BTC
