There were notable gains in the cryptocurrency market on Thursday, while major currencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) remained without significant movements.
Meanwhile, one Bitcoin trader pointed out that the high dominance ratio indicates a possible short-term correction.
Bitcoin and Major Currencies Movements
Bitcoin is up less than 1% in the past 24 hours, while other major coins like Ethereum ($ETH ), BNB ($BNB ), and Dogecoin (#DOGE: ) have shown mixed price action.
Last week, Bitcoin's dominance reached over 57%, the highest since April 2021. Dominance refers to the ratio of Bitcoin's market cap to the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies combined, and is often used as an indicator of market health.
A high dominance ratio indicates that Bitcoin is leading the market, meaning that investors prefer Bitcoin's relative stability compared to the risks associated with altcoins.
Conversely, a lower dominance ratio may indicate that investors are moving their capital into altcoins, which could signal the start of “altcoin season.”
Ethereum's market share is declining
“Ethereum continues to lose market share to Bitcoin and other altcoins. As a result, Bitcoin’s share of the total cryptocurrency market cap has risen to 57.3%, the highest since April 2021,” said Alex Kuptskevich, Chief Market Analyst at FxPro.
But he noted that this does not necessarily mean an uptrend for Bitcoin, which has fallen below $67,000, down 1% over the past day and nearly 4% from its peak on Oct. 21.
“The price is now close to the support level at $66.8K. If this support is broken, it could lead to a deeper correction to $65.5K,” Koptskevich added.
Solana leads the market
Solana's price rose 5% to $173 in the past 24 hours, extending its weekly gains to 14%, reaching levels not seen since early August.
Solana has hit a new all-time high against Ethereum, while meme coins tied to its network like Bobcat, Bonk, and Jot have surged by up to 70% amid increased trading volume and activity on the network.
