Family Receives $100 Million after Botched Circumcision by Disgraced Doctor

In a landmark case, a Palm Beach County family has been awarded $100 million following a botched circumcision that left their infant son with irreversible injuries. The lawsuit was filed against former doctor Berto Lopez, who performed the procedure just days after his medical license was revoked.

On February 15, 2021, Lopez conducted the circumcision on the 10-day-old boy, resulting in severe trauma and the complete loss of essential tissue, making future corrective surgeries impossible. The parents described the traumatic experience, detailing how their newborn screamed for nearly an hour during a procedure that should have taken mere minutes.

Michael Lubben, the boy's father, expressed deep concern for his son's emotional and physical well-being, stating, “He’s not old enough now to realize he’s different, but in just a couple of years, he will be.”

The court's ruling mandates that the $100 million be placed in a trust for the boy, ensuring access to funds for ongoing medical care and emotional support as he matures.

Lopez, who has a troubling history of malpractice, did not attend the court hearing. The family’s attorney criticized the medical board for allowing him to practice despite multiple infractions, underscoring the urgent need for increased accountability and safety in the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
