China Fines PwC Zhong Tian US$62.2 Million and Imposes Six-Month Audit Ban for Evergrande Failures

PwC Zhong Tian, the Chinese unit of PwC, has been hit with a record 441 million yuan (US$62.2 million) fine and a six-month ban from conducting audits. The penalties, issued by China’s Ministry of Finance, stem from PwC's failure to properly audit the troubled property developer China Evergrande Group between 2018 and 2020.

PwC was found to have missed key discrepancies in Evergrande’s financial statements, including the misrepresentation of assets and liabilities, which played a major role in the company's financial collapse. The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) also accused PwC of helping to conceal fraudulent activity by failing to conduct thorough onsite audits. For example, PwC failed to detect that some claimed completed properties were actually undeveloped land.

This is the strictest action ever taken against an audit firm in China, highlighting the government's push for greater transparency and accountability in the financial sector. The sanctions aim to prevent future auditing failures and reinforce confidence in China's financial regulations.
