French Government Websites Targeted by DDoS Attack Amid Controversy Over Telegram Founder’s Arrest
Several French government websites, including the Administrative Court of Paris, the French Health Department, and the Court of Cassation, were knocked offline in a DDoS attack allegedly orchestrated by a Russian hacker group. The attack is believed to be in response to the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France on August 24.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the situation on August 26, stating that Durov’s arrest was not politically motivated and emphasizing France's commitment to freedom of speech. However, the arrest has sparked criticism from the crypto community and free speech advocates, with figures like Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Elon Musk questioning the legal grounds for Durov’s detainment.
As of now, Durov remains in custody for questioning but has not been formally charged with any crime. French prosecutors have indicated that he could be held until August 28.
