American woman sues Google for losing $5 million through crypto app
Florida resident Maria Vaca has filed a lawsuit against Google demanding compensation for more than $5 million lost through a fraudulent crypto app from the Google Play store. This is reported by The Block.
From February to July 2023, the woman invested about $4.6 million in digital assets through the Yobit Pro program. When the app showed a balance of $7 million, Vaca tried to withdraw the funds.
In response, she received a message about the need to deposit $500,000 in “taxes”. After paying the amount, she was asked for another $2 million.
When Vaca refused to transfer the additional ransom, she received “[…] messages in the messenger from unknown cybercriminals”.
According to the American, she downloaded the app because she was sure that Google prevents dubious offers for users.
The complaint notes that approximately 12,760 Android users have allegedly installed Yobit Pro via Google Play, and at least five have encountered a similar situation.
