According to PeckShield Alert, hackers hacked Ava Labs COO Luigi D’Onorio DeMeo’s X account and used it to spread fake token launch information.
The cryptocurrency community is in a state of panic as users are warned not to access any links or addresses shared from DeMeo’s compromised X account.
This is part of a worrying trend of security breaches in the cryptocurrency space, with some cases suspected of being an insider. For example, in late May, trader GCR reported that his X account had been compromised through bribery, leading to a fraudulent ORDI pump and dump scheme. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT has hypothesized that the developers behind the Solana-based memecoin CAT may have been involved.
In another development, Sam Kazemian, founder of Frax Finance, has accused an X employee of being behind the project's account hack, which resulted in the loss of access to the decentralized stablecoin-backed protocol FRAX in early June.
Additionally, in June, Microsoft India’s X account was hacked to post a Roaring Kitty video that contained a link to a fake GameStop (GME) cryptocurrency purchase page. The incident was likely the result of a SIM swap attack, in which attackers exploited weaknesses in two-factor authentication systems.
