A lone Bitcoin miner struck it big today by processing a block on the largest cryptocurrency network.

This block contains 4,365 transactions and was processed at 23:43 last night (July 24). Miners received 3.19 BTC for processing this block – today worth around $210,000.

First posted on X by journalist Pete Rizzo, this miner processed block 853,742 of the Bitcoin blockchain.

Bitcoin miners are needed to process blocks on the Bitcoin network. The blocks are full of transaction data and are part of the cryptocurrency's impenetrable ledger – also known as the blockchain.

When blocks are processed, miners are rewarded with newly minted Bitcoins.

As the Bitcoin network grows larger, mining these digital coins becomes more difficult.

Today, miners are often large companies operating with warehouses full of specialized computers and technicians, using a lot of electricity to do so. Individual miners often join mining pools to increase their chances – but must share the rewards.

Very rarely, however, a single miner can still get lucky and process a block at home with a miner. Although the chances of a single miner completing a block are believed to be greater than 5,000-1, that appears to have happened today.

In April, a single miner also hit it big by solving a block and receiving a reward of $218,544.
