Polymarket blocked access to French users on Friday following reports that the French government was investigating its compliance with gambling laws, CoinDesk reported.

Although this ban was not reflected in Polymarket’s terms of service at the time of press, one journalist encountered a digital blockade when trying to access the site from a French server via a VPN.

The French National Gaming Authority (ANJ) took notice of the matter because a French trader placed a large number of bets on Trump winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The ban was first revealed on social media by French crypto news site The Big Whale.

Neither Polymarket nor ANJ immediately responded to requests for comment.
