On-chain gaming stands apart from traditional and hybrid gaming models by having its entire game logic and state hosted directly on the blockchain.
A fully on-chain gaming model offers the advantages of immutability and data permanence; composability and interoperability; community governance and true asset ownership. As growth in blockchain gaming is expected to witness a compounding annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 70.3% till 2025, fully on-chain games will likely see increased adoption as well. Despite these benefits, this emerging sector has to overcome several challenges such as technical constraints, poor user experience, bot interferences, and a fragmented gaming ecosystem.
Key contributors to the development of fully on-chain games include infrastructure providers, gaming studios, and the users themselves, each playing a pivotal role in realizing this vision.
On-chain games have garnered significant interest thus far as we saw notable game developers such as Proof of Play and Neon Machine raising US$33M and US$20M respectively to develop on-chain games. Progress and interest in on-chain games have also grown in tandem with gaming titles such as Nine Chronicles rising through the ranks to become the top 10 most popular games on DappRadar.
Though not imminent, the future of fully on-chain games is well-supported, with three key catalysts acting as tailwinds for mass adoption of on-chain gaming: engaging gameplay with sustainable design, advancements in gaming infrastructure and finally, the development of a more interoperable game economy, which is often referred to as the ‘Autonomous World’.
