According to CoinDesk, Dankrad Feist, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, suggested during a panel discussion at the Permissionless crypto conference in Austin, Texas, that the blockchain industry should consider using the term 'data publishing' instead of 'data availability'. Data availability refers to the concept that blockchains can operate more efficiently when the storage of data is handled separately from processing and confirming transactions. This allows the data to be independently verified or downloaded when users need it.

The idea of data availability is central to several emerging blockchain projects, such as Avail and Celestia, and is a key topic in discussions on how to scale Ethereum and its ecosystem of sub-networks to handle more transactions. Ethereum developers are also working on their own data-storage solution for the blockchain, called 'Danksharding', named after Feist. Feist believes that renaming data availability to data publishing would help people understand the concept more easily.
