According to Cointelegraph, Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 network, Base, experienced its first major outage since its public launch on August 9. On September 5, no new blocks were produced on the Base chain for approximately 45 minutes. The developers first identified the stalled block production at 9:36 pm UTC, as reported on the Base status site.

Coinbase stated that the delay in block production was due to a part of their internal infrastructure requiring a refresh. The team has since implemented a fix and observed widespread recovery. They are continuing to monitor the chain for further issues.

Matt Willemsen, head of research at crypto education platform Collective Shift, pointed out the differences in using Ethereum's Layer 2 networks, stating that they are not as 'battle tested' as Ethereum's mainnet. This outage serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with using newer networks like Base.
