**California Cracks Down on AI Deepfakes in Elections**

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a stringent new law, AB 2839, to combat politically-themed AI deepfakes during elections. This move comes after Elon Musk shared a parody of a Kamala Harris campaign ad, using AI to manipulate her voice, which went viral.

The law bans the distribution of materially deceptive content 120 days before and 60 days after elections in California. Newsom also signed two additional laws, AB 2355 and AB 2655, which mandate AI-generated political ads to be labeled and require social media platforms to remove deceptive content within 72 hours of a report.

These laws aim to safeguard election integrity and protect performers' digital likenesses.
