India. Following Telegram CEO #PavelDurov ās meeting in Paris on Saturday, an investigation has been launched that could lead to a ban on all sales of Telegram to Indian organizations.
The investigation, conducted by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, which is a component of the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is examining Telegram as a company that operates in blackmail and gambling. It is stated that it could be banned in countries depending on the findings.
Durov was seized by French police while arriving at Le Bourget Airport in Paris from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on his private jet. Durovās main reason was stated as the lack of adequate measures to combat criminal activities on the app. The Telegram CEOās detention period was extended to 96 hours today. Accordingly, Durov will be detained until August 28.
Durov founded VKontakte, a Facebook-like platform in Russia, in 2007, and was eliminated as the "Mark Zuckerberg of Russia." As VK became Russia's largest social media platform, state pressure on the platform increased day by day. In 2014, the Russian government demanded that dissidents on VK leave. Durov, who opposed this demand, sold his feelings on VK and left Russia.
Durov launched Telegram in 2013. The messaging platform quickly gained popularity and has reached nearly 1 billion users today. Durov holds French and United Arab Emirates citizenship.
