The good news is that you can now participate in the ZRO airdrop.

The bad news, however, is that participants will need to pay a fee.

Previously, the market questioned the amount of Layerzero's airdrop, and many people complained that they worked hard to participate in the interaction, but found that the number of tokens they received was not satisfactory, which made people feel a bit like being insulted.

And this insult appears to have happened twice.

As of the evening of June 20, Layerzero officially announced that ZRO airdrops are now available, but not for free:

To claim ZRO tokens, users need to donate $0.10 in USDC, USDT, or Ethereum’s native ETH for each ZRO.

LayerZero has officially named this claiming process Proof-of-Donation, and plans to donate up to $18.5 million to the Protocol Guild, a collective funding mechanism for Ethereum developers, through this new claiming mechanism.

Regardless of the transparency and purpose of donations, from the user's perspective, this rule can be expressed in plain language as follows:

If you want to receive airdrops, you must pay first.

This is the first time that airdrop has been introduced in the crypto market.

You’ve seen pool withdrawals, empty white papers, sorry we failed, and other shady scams, but openly collecting a portion of donations from your airdrop is unheard of.

So Airdrop to Earn became Pay to Earn.

Forced donation, strong contrast

What is even more emotional is that before receiving ZRO, the Layerzero official page shows a section called "Historical Review".

This review is similar to the annual summary commonly seen in domestic Internet companies, listing in detail warm memories such as "You used omnichain for the first time on X day" and "You interacted X times in total", as if to let you re-experience the hard work you put in to participate.

This recap is not problematic in itself, but when it is compared to the donation requirements on the final collection page, it becomes a bit heartbreaking.

It seems to imply that all your previous efforts and interactions will eventually be transformed into a financial donation burden before you can receive the ZRO tokens you have been waiting for.

"Bulk hair removal? Create a boutique account? Multiple chains together?

Unexpectedly, the clown turned out to be you.

It is not until the last moment that you realize what the restrictions are on the receiving page; according to industry practice, you will at most feel that the rules for allocating the number of airdrops may be a bit unfair, after all, it is difficult to satisfy everyone.

But the design of paying to receive the airdrop is really unexpected. Perhaps as the project owner, they have already planned it, but they just couldn’t make it public at the beginning and waited until the last step to disclose it, just to make your sunk cost higher.

Here, the collection rules set by the smart contract have become a thorn in the hearts of many participants. Sorry, it cannot be changed. The contract has been set, and if you want to participate, you must donate.

It's not that donations are bad, nor that people lack kindness; it's just that this seemingly compulsory and malicious design can easily make people feel contrasted and disappointed, and misunderstand "donation" as "robbery."

Airdrop tax, robbing the rich and the poor

If we conceptualize the abstraction of the donation button, it can actually be considered a kind of "airdrop tax."

The project party will give you rewards for your interactive behavior, but the amount of the reward is entirely determined by the project party. At the same time, there is no legal provision prohibiting the project party from extracting part of the tax from the reward for other purposes.

I am the fish on the chopping board. The project party has provided an airdrop, which is already very good. What's wrong with levying personal taxes?

From the perspective of the project owner, this is reasonable, even a bit greedy; but from the perspective of the majority of users, the project owner may feel that they are a bit self-centered.

For large households and bulk participants, if each ZRO is required to pay a donation, large households will obviously have to pay more. But small households are not spared either. Under the design of each 0.1, everyone faces it equally, whether rich or poor.

Some netizens even expressed on Twitter that the donation tax they paid was not strictly calculated based on $0.1 per donation, and they actually had to pay more, which made them feel like they were being blackmailed.

Coupled with the surge in gas fees during airdrops, small households who receive airdrops may feel that they have made some money but not entirely as they expected, or even feel like they have been cheated.

Will you still be determined to earn money from multiple accounts? Studio-level airdrop hunters need to carefully calculate their input-output ratio and keep their costs as low as possible; after all, no one can estimate what the tax rate of the donation is.

The huge profits in the golden age eventually led to involution.

For user rolls, more and more people come, and you don’t interact, but some people interact. For project rolls, you get less and less in the end, and even have a taxable design.

There is a saying that goes, the future is already here, it’s just unevenly distributed.

Layerzero’s payment to receive ZRO is the first, but it will definitely not be the last in the future.

Subsequent project parties may use more moderate tax rates, more circuitous excuses, and more grandiose narratives to take away part of the airdrops you have already received. As a market participant and acceptor of the rules, you may have no other choice.

Want to collectively not resist this behavior? In a decentralized crypto forest with diverse motivations, this is even more difficult.

Lower your expectations and live within your means. There is no free lunch in this world, and there may be no free airdrops in the future.
