According to Foresight News, Illia Polosukhin, founder of $NEAR , announced the master plan for the NEAR AI research and development laboratory. The plan is to implement open-source and user-owned artificial general intelligence (AGI) in three phases. These stages include the AI programmer, which involves teaching machines to code, the AI researcher, who uses the AI programmer to instruct machines to conduct research, and finally, the use of AI researchers to promote scientific development and the move toward widely shared AGI.

Polosukhin stated that NEAR AI development will always be open source, providing software, datasets and models to the broader community to further develop other products. The project will require a range of infrastructure beyond the basic blockchain primitives, including peer-to-peer communications, edge data and inference, decentralized data storage, and private computing. More developers than ever will be needed to write code to train models. All of this can only be achieved by participating in the entire NEAR ecosystem and leveraging the existing NEAR token economy.
