-CoinGecko is warning users to be careful when opening emails after cryptocurrency aggregators experienced a data leak via third-party email platforms.
CoinGecko said in a statement dated 6/05/2015 that the company detected unusual activity on the GetResponse email marketing platform.
The company then received confirmation that the attacker obtained GetResponse employee credentials and used them to access a customer's account.
The attacker was able to export 1,916,596 contacts from the CoinGecko account to GetResponse and use another GetResponse customer's account to send phishing emails to 23,723 email addresses.
CoinGecko says it has already made arrangements with GetResponse to block the additional emails, but warns users that they may experience a spike in phishing and spam.
"An email in which CoinGecko or GeckoTerminal purportedly offers to issue a #token is an unauthorized email sent by an attacker. We do not officially issue coins or tokens. " "
