108 former federal prosecutors and US agents have written a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding assistance in freeing Binance cryptocurrency exchange Vice President of Global Intelligence and Investigations Tigran Gambaryan from custody in Nigeria.
In their opinion, the US government is making “insufficient efforts” in this matter and the consequences could be “terrible.”
Ex-officials recalled Gambaryan’s services as a special agent of the Internal Revenue Service, which he held for more than ten years.
The specialist led several major investigations in the field of cybercrime, including the case of corrupt agency agents accused of stealing cryptocurrency from the darknet marketplace Silk Road. He also led investigations related to money laundering on the BTC-e platform and the hacking of the Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox.
According to the authors of the letter, the top manager of Binance was detained on false charges, and his position does not imply authorized representation of the company to participate in the trial.
Earlier, members of the US Congress also called on President Joe Biden to intervene in the proceedings of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange in Nigeria.
Let us remind you that the Nigerian authorities accuse Binance Holdings Limited, Gambaryan and the director of the exchange in West and East Africa Nadeem Anjarwalla of tax evasion. Separately, they are charged with laundering at least $21.6 billion and conducting specialized financial activities without a license. The company and top managers deny any wrongdoing.
Previously, Gambaryan was denied bail due to fears that he might escape. Anjarwalla secretly flew from Nigeria to Kenya in late March. However, authorities have tracked him there and are preparing his extradition.
The exchange was required to provide the details of all Nigerian users and their transaction history. The platform was also required to settle any outstanding tax liabilities.
Binance potentially faces a fine of $10 billion.
