LayerZero Labs, a company working on the blockchain interoperability protocol LayerZero, is working to establish a fair and smooth standard for airdrops – aka Sybil. The so-called Sybil means that users control multiple wallets to obtain airdrop rewards, which causes unfairness to airdrops. The final fairness remains to be seen, and the airdrop caused a lot of drama. Players who used a large number of wallets in an attempt to obtain airdrops expressed dissatisfaction; and people began to "report" each other, resulting in a situation where there were too many whistleblowers.

The chaos of LayerZero’s rollout

LayerZero’s final snapshot showed six million unique wallets interacting with the protocol, which reached a $3 billion valuation following its latest funding round in April 2023. Prior to the bounty hunter phase, up to 100,000 addresses self-reported as Sybil. According to statistics, there are a total of 800,000 addresses, all of which may be Sybil accounts.

After bounty hunters were allowed to report addresses that were not self-reported, there was an explosion of reports and many complaints...

Bryan Pellegrino, CEO of LayerZero Labs, wrote in a post on Twitter: "...waking up was like being on a battlefield. We already knew it was going to be PvP [player versus player], but this is a different story entirely. "Just hours after the latest phase of LayerZero's airdrop began, users began reporting Sybil accounts that had not self-declared for bounties, and LayerZero received more than 3,000 bounty reports and 30,000 appeals.

GitHub has experienced an explosion of complaints and will temporarily suspend complaints.

Since these reports were implemented on GitHub, some users reported the accuser's account, causing GitHub to delete the account and their reports.

Pellegrino announced today that the reporting process would be suspended for "a day or two" to address the issues. One possible solution he proposed was to implement a 0.02 ETH (~$60 at current price) margin for reporting submissions to reduce the use of automated reporting systems.

Solutions for the future

"The main issues being addressed are that the best bounty hunters can still submit reports (with a bond that is not too expensive) and that submission of reports should be fair in the event of a conflict," Pellegrino said. "For the time being, we need to process a large number of reports and complaints.
