Reddit and OpenAI have just announced a strategic partnership, allowing ChatGPT to access Reddit's massive data warehouse, promising to bring groundbreaking user experiences to both platforms.
According to the agreement signed on May 16, OpenAI will integrate content from Reddit's huge data warehouse of more than 1 billion posts and 16 billion comments into ChatGPT. OpenAI will access the Reddit Data API, providing real-time, structured and unique content from Reddit, helping OpenAI improve its ability to effectively “understand and present” content.
The partnership also allows Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to users and admins. Reddit will rely on OpenAI's AI modeling platform to realize its powerful vision.
The special feature of this agreement lies in the relationship between OpenAI and Reddit when Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, holds 8.7% of the shares, the third largest stake in the company. However, OpenAI affirmed that the deal was carried out in a transparent and professional manner, under the direction of Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, and through the approval of the independent board of directors.
Cooperating with OpenAI is one of Reddit's important strategies to increase revenue and affirm its position in the market. Reddit has signed multiple data licensing deals totaling more than $200 million, and the company's non-advertising revenue in its first quarter as a public company grew 450% year over year. , mainly thanks to these agreements.
The news had a positive impact on Reddit's stock price, which rose 11% in extended trading after the announcement.
However, this agreement also faced concerns from some Reddit users about data privacy issues. Sharing personal data for AI training purposes poses the risk of information leakage and abuse.
