Odaily Planet Daily News Colombian President Gustavo Petro allegedly accepted more than $500,000 in digital tokens from a scam crypto project to fund his 2022 campaign, according to local media reports. Colombia's cryptocurrency project Daily COP illegally donated 2 billion Colombian pesos, or about $514,036 in cryptocurrency, to Petro's campaign in 2022, Omar Hernández, a former contractor for the token project, told Caracol Radio on Wednesday. According to Hernández, the donation was discussed in a meeting between Daily COP co-founder Sebastián Betancourt and Petro's then-campaign manager Ricardo Roa at a bakery in Bogota in February 2022, when the two sides also discussed "the advantages of cryptocurrency as an alternative to the traditional banking system."
