Hackers who stole $182,000,000 from Poloniex begin transferring funds to Tornado Cash
According to digital asset de-anonymization platform Arkham, the hacker who robbed cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex began moving Ethereum (ETH) to the Tornado Cash mixing service.
Arkham notes that the hacker transferred 1,126.1 ETH, worth more than $3.4 million, into Tornado Cash through a series of 20 transactions on Monday and Tuesday.
They represent the attacker's first steps into a controversial Ethereum-based cryptomixer that helps users hide their digital assets.
A hacker raided Poloniex in early November, stealing $56 million worth of ETH, $48 million of Tron (TRX) and $18 million of Bitcoin (BTC), as well as smaller amounts of other crypto assets.
The exchange, owned by Tron founder Justin Sun, offered a 5% reward, which was not accepted. According to Arkham, the hacker still has $181.47 million worth of cryptocurrency in his main address.
Justin Sun-linked projects have suffered numerous attacks over the past few months: In September, hackers took advantage of Sun-linked exchange giant HTX for approximately 4,999 Ethereum worth $7.9 million, according to blockchain security company PeckShield.
Then, in November, hackers attacked HTX and Heco Bridge, another Sun-related project that is used to move funds between Ethereum and the energy-efficient blockchain Heco Chain, for a total of $100 million, according to cybersecurity company Cyvers.
And in January, hackers again attacked HTX, hitting the exchange with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that caused a brief outage.
A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt by attackers to flood a target website with traffic in order to overload the site's infrastructure.
