US investigators believe Ver and his companies were in possession of 131,000 Bitcoins while he was a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis. The two companies owned 73,000 Bitcoins.
The Department of Justice stated that Ver provided false or incomplete information to the law firm and appraiser about how many Bitcoins Ver and his companies owned. The law firm allegedly prepared and filed overvalued tax returns that undervalued the two companies and 73,000 Bitcoins and failed to show that Ver owned any Bitcoins.
Additionally, Ver's company sold "tens of thousands" of Bitcoin for $240 million in November 2017. US authorities demanded that Ver report his profits to the IRS and pay taxes on dividends from two US-based companies.
The Department of Justice stated that Ver did not make any profits or tax payments on MemoryDealers and Agilestar's Bitcoins in his 2017 personal tax return. Ver is said to have cost the IRS at least $48 million in losses.
