Blania said Worldcoin will upgrade its verification system. The upgrade includes plans to introduce various types of Orb models and expand its availability to more regions around the world.

Worldcoin is actively seeking collaborations to expand its footprint in the tech industry, especially in artificial intelligence (AI) and finance. According to a report by Bloomberg on Thursday, the iris scanning project co-founded by Sam Altman is in discussions with OpenAI, a leading US research organization specializing in the development of responsible AI.

Explore partnerships beyond AI

Through Tools for Humanity, the development think tank behind it, Worldcoin is also looking to form partnerships with other companies outside of the AI market.

In an interview with Bloomberg, CEO Alex Blania revealed that Tools for Humanity is in discussions with heavyweight players in the tech and financial industries, but he did not reveal their names.

In June 2023, Worldcoin partnered with identity and access management software provider Okta to integrate "Login with Worldcoin" into Okta's authentication marketplace. The integration enables developers to offer Worldcoin as a login option in their applications to supplement or replace existing product services from tech giants such as Apple and Google.

Advancing Authentication with Orb Technology

Worldcoin’s identity verification system is built around its proprietary biometric imaging device, the Orb, which, according to Blania and Altman, creates a “proof of human” identification mechanism that distinguishes humans from AI tools and robots.

Given the rapid growth of the AI market and the launch of chatbots like ChatGPT, the boss of Tools for Humanity said verifying whether someone is a real individual is more important and urgent now than ever before.

“All the things we thought were going to happen with the advancement of AI are happening much faster than we expected,” he said.

Worldcoin will upgrade Orb

Blania said Worldcoin will upgrade its verification system. The upgrade includes plans to introduce various types of Orb models and expand its availability to more global regions.

Regarding the Orb model currently used for scanning, Blania clarified that it was originally designed as a prototype and was never intended for commercial release. To encourage transparency, Worldcoin recently open-sourced part of its verification software to everyone. In addition, Worldcoin will no longer use the terminology associated with its previous "universal basic income," a term that Altman was personally very passionate about.

The project was originally launched in 2019 to facilitate payments in specific scenarios. However, it has been criticized for its labor practices when iris scans are performed in exchange for monetary compensation in several countries including Indonesia, Kenya, Sudan, Ghana and Chile.

Blania pointed out that the term "allocation of scarce resources" is now preferred over "universal basic income" because the latter is a politically sensitive term with communist connotations. He emphasized that the new term has a broader meaning, including not only monetary allocation but also computing resources that are crucial for training AI models. #Worldcoin  #OpenAI
