Ethereum’s “Dencun” Update and EIP-4844, “Proto-Danksharding”

The Ethereum network just upgraded! On March 13, developers and users waited with bated breath for the blockchain’s latest upgrade, “Dencun” Leap, a mashup of “Deneb” and “Cancun” that refers to two simultaneous updates to Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers.

As the most significant update since “Shapella” in April 2023, the Dencun update is expected to usher in a huge shift towards better scalability, including lower data fees (gas fees) and faster speeds. The Ethereum community has already predicted significant savings and lower cost usage of the blockchain, and developers of the Optimism chain have even created a savings estimation tool for common transactions.

Specifically, Dencun introduces a new data storage method called “proto-danksharding” or “blobbing,” which bundles data into more manageable blocks that can be temporarily stored on the blockchain and processed in parallel to optimize speed.

Sony signs new patent for “super-fungible tokens” to power games

Sony, the tech giant behind PlayStation, has published a patent for the concept of a “super fungible token,” which was originally filed in 2022 and describes a system of earning tokens by playing games that would allow gamers to own and transfer in-game digital items between users.

Sony has reportedly not yet revealed whether its blockchain ecosystem will be private or public and interoperable, but the patent does suggest the global tech brand is serious about incorporating NFTs into its games.

As currently described, super-fungible tokens will utilize metadata to identify and manage in-game assets such as skins, items, and abilities, potentially allowing players to exchange those assets or use them in different games.
