What is BitTorrent (BTT)?

Many people are interested in using peer-to-peer (P2P) content distribution protocols to increase the throughput and scalability of distributed systems. A peer refers to a computer on a network or to other people using the Internet. One example is the P2P file sharing application BitTorrent, originally released in 2001 by Bram Cohen and David Harrison to eliminate long wait times when downloading large files online.

BitTorrent is a distributed transmission protocol that is different from other Internet transmission protocols such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP). The protocol used to send files over the Internet, such as text, photos, and videos, is called HTTP. However, users start using HTTP as soon as they open a web browser. Similarly, FTP allows users to upload, download and transfer files between computer systems and from one location to another on the Internet.
