A glimpse at Mainnet and a new era for the Cartesi ecosystem

As Cartesi Rollups (https://docs.cartesi.io/cartesi-rollups/) approaches mainnet readiness, a new era is about to dawn on the Cartesi ecosystem. As such, we wanted to briefly recap what has already happened and the exciting new initiatives currently underway.

Decentralization

Community Grant Program

Earlier this year, Cartesi launched its Community Grants Program (CGP), a community-driven pilot program designed to expand the network of contributors building the Cartesi ecosystem. While increasing the utility of the CTSI token, CGP enables those who stake CTSI to have an active governance role in allocating grant program funds.

With $1 million available for grants in 2023, developers seeking funding can review the CGP review process, rules, and guidelines to submit your application!

Keep an eye out for more community governance driven initiatives in the future, such as the ecosystem incentive program mentioned below.

Discord

To increase transparency, encourage idea sharing, foster greater collaboration, attract new contributors, and further grow the ecosystem, the Cartesi Foundation is actively encouraging all grant trustees to migrate more technical discussions to public Discord channels.

In addition to this, Cartesi is advancing its decentralization efforts and piloting the introduction of a guild program to identify and recognize contributions from community members. This is not only intended to be a vector for future decentralized activities, but also to encourage developers and community members to continue to participate in and grow the Cartesi ecosystem.

Please keep an eye out for a reorganization of the Cartesi Discord channel in the coming months, which will include more dynamic public discussions involving research and development of Cartesi core technologies.

Rebranding

Over the past year, Cartesi’s core contributors, builders, and community members have gradually reached a consensus that the brand needs to evolve to more accurately reflect the values and future vision of the Cartesi community.

As such, we are excited to announce the newest contributor to the Cartesi ecosystem, Noir - a Web3 branded venture studio focused on the intersection of community and technology. Noir's contribution will focus on creating a new brand identity for Cartesi's technology and ecosystem. This updated identity will embody the spirit of openness, decentralization, and transformational potential, better representing the current values of the Cartesi ecosystem.

Through this rebrand, Noir aims to help Cartesi reflect the project’s progression toward greater decentralization, empower future developers and attract meaningful contributions, particularly amid a new wave of interest around application-specific Rollups.

As high-profile Web3 projects in Noir’s portfolio, along with Moonpay, Rarestone, and Biconomy, we’re excited to see Noir help establish Cartesi as a new phase of broad experimentation, helping our developer community turn impossible ideas into reality.

Cartesi DApp’s Road to Mainnet

In the Cartesi community channels, the question “When is mainnet?” comes up frequently, confusing many community members and contributors.

Part of the confusion is because Cartesi Rollups is an application-specific execution environment that can be deployed as a second or third layer, rather than a first-layer blockchain or DApp. This means that the traditional concept of "mainnet launch" for Cartesi is different from many other blockchain projects. What actually goes on the mainnet is the DApp built using Cartesi.

With the launch of the first Cartesi powered DApp “Honeypot” on mainnet, Cartesi Rollups will be ready and DApps will also be on mainnet.

Honeypot DApp on Mainnet

Cartesi core contributors are fine-tuning Cartesi Rollups and enhancing the security and usability of the Cartesi Rollups infrastructure. Now, it’s time for another test: protecting real assets in a permissionless, decentralized environment!

To achieve this goal, Cartesi grantees are preparing to launch the Honeypot DApp on the Ethereum mainnet, designed to engage the Cartesi developer community in an exciting hackathon. The Honeypot DApp, developed and deployed using Cartesi technology, will hold real assets and has a dual goal: to set a financial benchmark for secure asset management and to provide a gamified battlefield for the community to assist in auditing and testing Cartesi’s cutting-edge technology.

Unlike traditional bug bounties or capture the flag campaigns, there are no hacks to submit and no hidden elements to discover. Hack the Honeypot and the reward is yours - no strings attached!

The mainnet launch of the Honeypot DApp will mark the beginning of a new era for the Cartesi project. As Honeypot is tested and hardened, users and developers will have increased confidence in the security of Cartesi technology and can launch and use new DApps that hold real assets.

Ecosystem and adoption

Ecosystem Incentive Program

With the launch of the Honeypot DApp and the mainnet readiness statement of Cartesi Rollups, the Cartesi Foundation plans to create a new ecosystem incentive program, managed by the community and funded by CTSI. The Ecosystem Incentive Program will provide support for Cartesi DApps deployed on the mainnet. Through this program, a certain amount of CTSI will be available for eligible DApps as an incentive mechanism to attract users and promote applications.

Hackathon

Following a strong performance in 2022, Cartesi will continue to participate in the ETH Global Hackathon in 2023 and plans to sponsor events such as ETH Lisbon, ETH Paris, ETH New York, ETH Istanbul, and ETHGlobal Online. With a total prize pool of over $50,000 at the ETH Global Hackathon and other competitions, we look forward to seeing the next wave of developers coming to compete with Cartesi technology.

Technical Seminars

To encourage technical experimentation and attract new developers, Cartesi will continue to host technical workshops for developer communities around the world. Building on successful workshops such as Think&Dev, Web3Ladies, NITW (National Institute of Technology, Warangal), Austin Python, Red Hat Blockchain Community of Practice, EasyA, Inteli, etc., we look forward to seeing more organizations and universities working with the Cartesi community to introduce the next wave of Web3 builders to Cartesi technology.

in conclusion

With Cartesi Rollups rapidly approaching mainnet readiness, the future prospects for the Cartesi ecosystem are exciting. We look forward to seeing the Cartesi ecosystem reach new heights in the coming months as our growing community of contributors drives continued innovation in the project!

About Cartesi

Cartesi is an application-specific Rollup execution layer with a Linux runtime. Cartesi Rollup can be deployed as a second layer (on top of Ethereum), a third layer (on top of Optimism, Arbitrum, zkEVM, etc.), or a sovereign Rollup. It opens up the design space for more expressive and computationally intensive blockchain applications.

DApps can be deployed on their own customized application-specific Rollup chains;

In Cartesi’s ecosystem, DApps do not compete with each other for scarce block space;

Cartesi provides several times the computing capacity of Ethereum or L2;

Developers can write decentralized logic using their favorite libraries, compilers, and other time-tested open source components;

DApps retain the strong security guarantees and censorship resistance of the underlying blockchain;
