The Ethereum ecosystem aims to set a February 8 mainnet launch date for the Dencun upgrade, which offers significant improvements for Layer-2 solutions. This upgrade includes features such as proto-dank sharding, which will reduce transaction costs around Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).
Tim Beiko, Ethereum's core developer, stated that the upgrade has successfully passed its final testing and that Ethereum developers discussed the final details in a recent meeting. The Dencun upgrade follows last year's Shapella update and is seen as a significant step that could attract more institutional investors.
According to Galaxy Digital's Christine Kim, there is an 80% chance Dencun will be active on the mainnet by the end of March. However, it is stated that it may be possible to upgrade by the end of February, but this probability is around 40%.
The Dencun network upgrade has been successfully activated on the Goerli testnet, introducing proto-dank sharding that is thought to greatly reduce transaction costs on Ethereum Layer-2 networks. This innovation aims to reduce the cost of rollups by increasing data availability.
Proto-dank sharding has the aim of making data processing processes on the Ethereum network more economical by storing data in a new partitioned storage space called a 'blob'.
