According to Wu, Detroit city officials announced that the city will become the largest city in the United States to accept cryptocurrency payments. Residents can pay taxes and other fees using cryptocurrencies through a secure platform managed by PayPal.

Treasurer Nikhil Patel said the option will be available by mid-2025, with further improvements planned for city payment services. It’s part of the city’s strategy to explore innovative technologies to enhance public services.

Currently, three states in the United States, Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana, accept cryptocurrencies as a payment method for state government fees.
