Federal prosecutors have disputed Ryan Salame’s allegations about his plea agreement, saying they never promised to stop the criminal investigation of his partner, Michelle Bond, who they say was lawfully prosecuted, CoinDesk reported.
In a 32-page memorandum filed by prosecutors, they urged U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York to deny Salame's petition, calling it an attempt to overturn the plea agreement and conviction and to undermine the legitimate prosecution of Bond.
Bond is accused of violating campaign finance laws during his 2022 run for Congress and faces up to 20 years in prison. Salame's lawyers said the government had broken its promise not to bring charges against Bond.
On August 29, Salame withdrew his petition, but Judge Kaplan still decided to hold a hearing and asked Salame to appear. The prosecutor asked the judge to dismiss the petition, saying that Salame's allegations were inaccurate and false.
A hearing is scheduled for September 12, 2024.
