According to CoinDesk, prosecutors are asking for Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev to be sentenced to 64 months in prison. The outcome of the case could have broader implications for the treatment of developers working on open source projects. Dutch prosecutors asked the judge at Pertsev’s money laundering trial to sentence him to 64 months in prison, members of the prosecution team told CoinDesk. The two-day trial, which took place at the 'S-Hertogenbosch court on Tuesday and Wednesday, could have implications for the treatment of developers in other local courts. The judge will announce the verdict on May 14, the court said. Dutch prosecutors accused Pertsev of laundering $1.2 billion worth of cryptocurrency through the anonymity tool Tornado Cash, in an indictment unsealed ahead of the trial. The indictment alleges that Pertsev conducted money laundering activities from July 9, 2019, to August 10, 2022. Pertsev was first jailed in the Netherlands in August 2022 after the Tornado Cash platform was blacklisted by the U.S. Treasury Department. The U.S. Treasury Department accuses Tornado Cash of being a key tool of the Lazarus Group, the North Korean hacking group linked to the $625 million hack of Axie Infinity's Ronin Network, among other issues. Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Roman Semenov also face charges of money laundering and sanctions violations in the United States. Storm is due to go to trial in September this year. The United States has not yet arrested Semenov.
