Marathon Digital, the largest public crypto miner in North America, has incorporated global expansion into its strategy, Blockworks reported. Florida-based Marathon Digital has entered the UAE and Paraguayan markets in recent months, and is also eyeing the African continent, where miners are flocking. Charlie Schumacher, vice president of corporate communications at Marathon Digital, said: "We are paying attention to Africa. We believe that Bitcoin mining is one of the technological solutions in the energy sector, and Africa may be a great place to prove this thesis." According to Bloomberg, Ethiopia has seen an increase in the influx of miners recently as companies in the field look for low-cost energy and an ideal climate. For example, Chinese companies were forced to stop operations in their own country after a domestic ban on crypto mining in 2021 and turned to Ethiopia. Schumacher revealed to Blockworks that power resources in some African countries are idle or underutilized. "If we can connect Bitcoin miners to these power sources, then we can increase the profitability of these power sources and ensure that they remain online for those who need them." He also added: "More power is needed across the African continent. Bitcoin miners can incentivize the construction of more power on the African continent by becoming the first customers of new power projects."
