Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy Digital, recently predicted that the U.S. government is unlikely to purchase Bitcoin in 2025. Despite the proposal of a Bitcoin reserve policy by Cynthia Lummis, which would require the government to acquire a significant amount of BTC, Thorn believes the government will prioritize using its existing Bitcoin holdings. Currently, the U.S. government holds 183,850 BTC, which is valued at approximately $17.36 billion. If the proposed Bitcoin bill were to pass, the government would need to acquire an additional 200,000 BTC per year for five years to reach one million Bitcoin in reserve. However, Thorn argues that this is an unlikely scenario. He believes that the government will instead focus on building out its existing reserve using its current holdings. The debate surrounding a Bitcoin reserve policy is likely to continue, but the possibility of the government purchasing significant amounts of BTC in the near future remains uncertain.
