In 2024, cryptocurrency worth over $2.3 billion was stolen by hackers 💰💰
According to a report shared by the on-chain security company Cyvers, in 2024, crypto hackers stole assets worth over $2.3 billion in 165 incidents, a 40% increase compared to $1.69 billion in 2023.
Deddy Lavid, co-founder and CEO of Cyvers, stated that the 40% increase is mainly attributed to the rise in access control vulnerabilities, especially in centralized exchanges (CEX) and cryptocurrency custodians.
In 2024, losses due to access control vulnerabilities accounted for over 81% of the total cryptocurrency losses caused by hackers, with smart contract vulnerabilities becoming the second major attack vector, accounting for 19% of the losses in 2024. Michael Pearl, Cyvers' Vice President of GTM Strategy, indicated that the industry must remain vigilant as North Korean hackers may start targeting larger objectives, such as the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF.
