On December 23, Binance announced that Binance Launchpool will launch its 63rd project BIO Protocol (BIO), and trading pairs such as BIO/USDT and BIO/BNB will be available on January 3, 2025. According to Binance's announcement, the total supply of BIO Protocol's genesis token is 3,320,000,000, with an initial circulating supply of 1,296,529,168 tokens at the time of listing on Binance, accounting for approximately 39.05% of the total genesis token supply. Of these, 56% of BIO tokens will be allocated to the ecosystem and community, 25.4% to early contributors, and 18.6% to early supporters.
Since Binance Labs announced its investment in BIO Protocol, the DeSci market has reignited, with related concept tokens such as VITA, GROW, and RSC all experiencing significant increases. Following the news of Binance Launchpool, the recently popular ecological meme coins also surged rapidly, with RIF rising over 40% and URO over 35%, while DRUGS surged over 150%. In addition, established DeSci projects such as VITA and RSC have also begun to see market reactions.
In this article, BlockBeats comprehensively analyzed the current BIO ecosystem and potential projects related to DeSci concepts, from DAOs to NFTs to meme coins, revealing that the DeSci field is not lacking in speculation opportunities.
BIO ecosystem DeSci DAO
BIO is a network of biological DAOs, each focusing on developing research and products in specific scientific fields. Currently, the BIO network consists of eight different scientific communities focusing on areas such as longevity, women's health, neurodegenerative diseases, and synthetic biology. This article will not elaborate further on the background and mechanisms of the BIO Protocol.
Initial DeSci DAO
The initial DeSci DAO was established before BIO Protocol split from Molecule, and currently, there are 7 of them. After the establishment of BIO Protocol, these DAOs were first incorporated into the BIO network. During the previous BIO Genesis Event, users had to exchange BIO tokens by using the tokens of these DAO organizations, so these DAO tokens are also part of the BIO network's assets.
VitaDAO: Secured over $5 million in funding in the field of longevity science, is a DeSci decentralized science organization supported by Pfizer's venture capital division and Balaji Srinivasan, in collaboration with Newcastle University. Notably, VitaDAO is 'the elder of elders', the first DeSci DAO and the mother of the BIO Protocol, focusing on research in the field of longevity. The current BIO Protocol association was also founded by key members of VitaDAO, which is a Swiss nonprofit organization.
HairDAO: Targeting hair loss; the DAO owns the patented consumer product Follicool.
CerebrumDAO: Promoting brain health, raised over $1.5 million, and reached an agreement with Fission Pharma to address mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases.
ValleyDAO: Focused on synthetic biology, raised over $2 million, and collaborated with Imperial College London.
AthenaDAO: Promoting women's health R&D, providing $500,000 in funding for translational research, with 14 intellectual property transactions pending.
CryoDAO: Promoting the development of cryobiology, raised over $3 million, and established projects with Oxford Cryo Technology and Advanced Neurobiology.
PsyDAO: Focused on psychedelics, launched a new platform OPSY utilizing psychedelic trials and data.
First batch of Launchpad DAOs
BIO Protocol recently announced the first batch of Launchpad DAOs that will be launched through the BIO platform's Launchpad mechanism. The first DAO to conduct a token auction is Quantum Biology DAO, which ended its auction on December 17, with very active bidding, where the starting price exceeded the original listing price by more than 10 times.
Long COVID Labs: Accelerating the cure for over 100 million Long COVID patients. The founder is Rohan Dixit, a former neuroscientist at Stanford, healthcare entrepreneur, and Long COVID survivor.
Quantum Biology DAO: Manufacturing quantum microscopes to advance biological research. The founders are Clarice D. Aiello (PhD from MIT and a world-leading quantum biology scientist) and Geoff Anders (Executive Director of Leverage Research).
Curetopia (Rare Diseases): Addressing the rare disease field worth over $10,000 by uniting families and patient communities. The founder is Ethan Perlstein, a PhD from Harvard University, entrepreneur, and Y-Combinator alumnus.
BIO meme & AI DAO
In addition to serious research DAO organizations, the BIO team and community have also conducted interesting DeSci experiments outside of DeSci DAOs, successfully bringing significant attention to the DeSci field.
RIF/URO
Pump.Science is a meme token platform launched by BIO Protocol at this year's Token 2049 Solana Breakpoint conference, where players can purchase meme tokens representing drugs and participate in predicting drug effects and trading experimental data. The recent surge in RIF/URO after DEVCON Bangkok also ignited a direct spark in the DeSci field, which has been viewed as a speculative leader in DeSci for a long time.
DRUGS
DRUGS (Big Pharma) is also known as 'Little BIO', and is the 'favorite child' of the BIO Protocol ecosystem. DRUGS aims to disrupt the monopolistic business model of traditional large pharmaceutical companies and has received widespread support from the BIO ecosystem since its inception, including from Pump Science, other BIO DeSci DAOs, and BIO co-founder Paul himself.
GIRLE/BABY
GIRLE and BABY are AI DAO and meme tokens issued by AthenaDAO on the Solana DAOs.fun platform and Base chain, respectively, both supporting scientific research in the field of women's fertility.
Among them, GIRLE aims to empower the future of fertility through AI and Web3 with tokens. The team is currently conducting experiments related to peptide cellular repair, testing the effects of peptides on cells, and will soon launch related experimental tokens. Their official website also shows other token holdings in the DAO treasury.
BIO ecosystem IPT
IPT is an intellectual property token pioneered by the Molecule Catalyst platform, representing partial governance rights over generated scientific IP. These tokens give holders the opportunity to directly participate in the development, decision-making, and future direction of research. Each BioDAO typically holds a portfolio of IP tokens representing intellectual property associated with the specific scientific research field of the BioDAO. Currently, the most recognized IPTs are the IPT VitaRNA and VITA-FAST developed and owned by VitaDAO.
IPT VitaRNA & VITA-FAST
VitaRNA is the IPT of Artan Bio, a gene therapy project that has raised over $300,000. Artan Bio is exploring promising gene therapies that help address genetic factors related to aging. The company's approach aims to develop therapeutic candidates that may inhibit mutations that lead to aging. Artan Bio is led by two entrepreneurs who previously advanced a drug development platform to human clinical trials.
VITA-FAST is the IPT from Viktor Korolchuk's laboratory, which has also successfully raised over $300,000. VITA-FAST focuses on the research of drugs that enhance autophagy, a natural 'waste disposal' system built into our body cells that can eliminate unnecessary protein accumulation.
OVARIA
OVARIA is the IPT launched by AthenaDAO in collaboration with Gero. Gero is a biotechnology company that uses artificial intelligence for target and drug discovery. AthenaDAO collaborates with Gero to radically change the treatment landscape for ovarian aging, offering therapeutic potential in currently limited areas. AthenaDAO will use their platform to identify up to 10 new targets for ovarian aging, with trial results expected to delay menopause and reduce its health-related consequences.
Competitive & related memes
In addition to BIO-related projects, ecological interest has also expanded to other areas of DeSci.
RSC
Research Hub is a DeSci project founded by Coinbase CEO Brain Armstrong, with the mission of accelerating the pace of scientific research. By creating modern mobile and web applications, it enables people to conduct scientific research in a more efficient way.
In the ResearchHub platform, research papers are stored and grouped by research area in 'centers'. Personal centers essentially act as live journals within key areas, where posts with high voting rates (i.e., papers and their related abstracts and discussions) move to the top of each center.
Scihub
Scihub is inspired by the world's largest free paper download center Sci-hub, which faces legal issues due to open source and relies solely on donations for maintenance. 0xAA (@0xAA_Science) is the TOP1 holder of this token, currently holding 22% of the total tokens. He stated that he would donate 20% of the tokens to SciHub's operators to show support for their cause and platform development.
Currently, BIO Protocol has announced its roadmap for 2025, which includes:
BIO tokens will have their TGE on January 3 on the Ethereum mainnet;
BIO tokens will be launched on Solana and Base networks;
New BioDAO launched;
BIO/BioDAO liquidity pool;
The new BIO Launchpad is officially launched.
With the launch of BIO tokens on Binance, the DeSci field may see a new wave of excitement.
