“Craig Wright stages a real-life 'prison break'! The identity of the Bitcoin creator sparks controversy again!”
Self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, Craig Wright, finds himself embroiled in legal troubles once more. On December 19, British judge James Mellor ruled that Wright was guilty of contempt of court, sentencing him to one year in prison with probation and a fine of £145,000. This ruling stems from Wright's disregard for a court order, as he continued to sue Bitcoin developers.
The case was brought by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), which accused Wright of abusing the judicial system by falsely claiming to be the Bitcoin creator and filing lawsuits against over a hundred companies, seeking damages amounting to £90 billion. COPA's lawyer Jonathan Hoof described these lawsuits as “publicity stunts” aimed at maintaining Wright's base of supporters.
Since first publicly claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto in 2016, Wright's assertions have been met with ongoing controversy. In March of this year, a British court ruled that Wright is not the Bitcoin creator, and his subsequent appeal was dismissed. The judge pointed out that there was “widespread and systemic falsehood” in his evidence. Nevertheless, Wright continues to pursue legal action against relevant companies and individuals globally.
Notably, Wright's opponents have also begun to fight back. In July, a British court froze Wright's assets to assist podcast host Peter McCormack in recovering legal costs from a defamation case.
The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains elusive, while Wright's legal disputes have brought more dramatic conflicts to the crypto industry. Follow the professor, and let's dig deep into the hot topics in the crypto world and witness the next big drama together!
